I am a copper sculptor born in Southern Michigan in 1970. Growing up I spent a lot of my time in the woods and waters of Michigan hunting and fishing. While enjoying all the outdoors had to offer, in my mid-teens I started my first job which was at a small welding shop. From there I went into plant maintenance then finally went to school for electronics where I graduated with an associate’s degree in electronics engineering. Seeing that sitting behind a desk was not something I was interested in, I changed direction and went back to school for auto body repair where I learned the skill of sheet metal shaping and forming.
After several years working in body shops I decided to go back into plant maintenance where I continued to work until 2014 when health issues made the physical demands of plant maintenance out of the question. At that point I started doing side jobs and such for income. In 2016 my then girlfriend (Heather) and I decided to get married.
During the planning of the wedding Heather expressed she wanted something different for her bride’s bouquet. After some searching I came up with a copper rose to put in the center surrounded by hand made fabric flowers. That is where it all started. The copper rose came out beautiful and the wedding was perfect. Over the next few months I made and sold several roses for Valentine’s Day and mother’s day gifts. One day I decided to see if I could make a copper fish. The first one was a little rough, although it was the catalyst that started Woods-N-Waters Copper Décor. From that point I started creating different species of fish, flowers, and scenes. I have sculpted hundreds of pieces. Some from my own inspiration, some from my customer’s ideas.
I struggled for the first few years to consider myself an “Artist”, but finally I embraced the title. With no training, and not much exposure to the art world I have learned through trial and error, what makes my art stand out, and to this day with every piece I create, I experiment with different techniques and styles to achieve a look that excites my customers. I am always thinking of new pieces to create and interested in the input from my customers to improve my sculptures.
