Fishing reels over the years have greatly progressed in functionality and durability with the help of technological advancements. If you have ever ventured into your father’s or grandfather’s shed, you probably have come across a spincast reel. These reels have been around for many years and are often used by beginner anglers as they are extremely easy to use. Unlike other reels, the spincast reel has a closed face that has a hole on the cover to feed out the fishing line. The fishing line is expelled from the nose of the cover when the button is pushed while casting and stops when letting up. Of the three types of reels, the spincast does not give the user backlash. Reel backlash is a common headache among fishermen. It is caused when the lure slows down after casting the line and the spool does not. This, in return creates a mess of lines called a bird’s nest. Although this seems like a great reel to have, it does come with its flaws. When casting it can be inaccurate and can often lead to misplacement of a lure. It also has limitations to how far it can cast, which will greatly limit your reach. The spincast reel does have its pros and cons and can be looked at as a great starting reel if you are on a budget. If you are just picking up the sport of fishing it is advisable to start off with this type of reel as it will make your fishing experience enjoyable.

The most popular fishing reels that you will see are spinning reels that feature an open-faced design. This reel is easy to cast, has great accuracy, and can cast much further than the traditional spincasting reel. Instead of the reel being on top of the rod like a spincasting reel, it is instead seated below the rod. This allows the rod to have a nice balance to it which can help with fatigue. Another positive attribute is the large amount of fishing line that the reel can hold. Since the spinning reel is the most popular fishing reel on the market that is versatile with different kinds of soft baits and hard baits, many reel manufacturers offer different models that cater to specific types of fishing and budgets. One downside to spinning reels is that they are generally more expensive and can be challenging for newer anglers. However, if you are looking for a reel that will surely prove itself in its performance and do not mind the price, then a spinning fishing reel might be a good fit for you.

When it comes to Baitcasting fishing reels, it’s all about performance. Baitcasting reels are the most advanced of the 3 main types of fishing reels out on the market. This is mainly because of a few key features this reel has. The internal braking system regulates the rotation of the spool as it is casting, while the spoon tension knob helps adjust the speed of the spool. These key features of the baitcasting reel allow for smoother and longer distance casts, which should be adjusted to fit the weight of the lure being used. The downside to a dialed-in system is that if not adjusted correctly you are prone to more backlash which can make it frustrating for first time baitcast users. Additionally, it can be challenging because you must use your thumb as a brake alongside the internal braking system. Although these reels are great for fast retrieval and catching large fish, they are the most expensive out of the 3 main types of fishing reels. If you are a seasoned fisherman and have the patience to learn the skill set needed for this reel then this is the right reel for you.

Louie’s Final Thought

When it comes to sports there is always different equipment that is tailored to different levels of skill. If you are a newer angler one key point is money does not buy skill. Just because a reel is expensive does not mean it will give you great performance, the user’s knowledge and skill are equally important. That being said start off with a reel that you are comfortable with and have fun catching fish!
